Here’s an initial look at about a week’s worth of #FeesMustFall data covering 217k tweets. The discussion has two main halves: “mainstream” and “students and activists“, with the media sitting right between them.
It’s interesting to see several distinct student/activist communities forming in this dataset. There is a clear Cape Town one and another Gauteng one. This distinction was not as clear in the 2015 protests. Things seem more organised this year with regional accounts such as @FeesMustFallWC appearing to anchor discussions.
Note that I have ranked the communities in size from biggest to smallest. The number in front of the community label gives you its rank.
